Synopsis
n a retirement community in New Jersey, Academy Award-winning filmmaker David Goodman recorded a series of interviews with the residents — Japanese Americans, European Jews, soldiers and peace activists who survived The Great Depression and World War II. They candidly discussed the values and principles of tolerance and mutual respect that were forged in their youth—when they were confronted with anti-Semitism, internment camps, bigotry, and the horrors of combat.
Contextualized by scenes of modern protests involving a variety of social issues, this carefully documented and riveting tapestry of interviews is punctuated with home movies, family photographs and newsreel footage that reminds us that our history has always involved monstrous injustice—sometimes committed by our own government—and that ordinary people have taken extraordinary steps to fight back.
