Synopsis

THROUGH THE DARKNESS illuminates the relationship between two Jewish Austrian artistic geniuses: a story that would change their lives and modern culture forever.
In 1907, the aspiring composer Arnold Schoenberg made friends with the brilliant and unknown painter Richard Gerstl. Gerstl and Schoenberg not only shared a passion for art, but also a love for the same woman, Mathilde Schoenberg.
This triangular relationship ultimately caused Gerstl’s tragic death at the age of 25, and led Schoenberg to revolutionize musical history with a new way of composing.
The rivals were united after Gerstl’s death when both artists’ work was banned by the Nazis. In recent years, their genius has re-emerged to inspire a new generation.
